About University of Miskolc

The University of Miskolc is a leading public research university in northeastern Hungary. It traces its origins to the Mining and Metallurgy School founded at Selmecbánya in 1735, one of Europe’s earliest technical institutes. The modern university was established by act of parliament in 1949 and became known as the Technical University of Heavy Industry until 1990. Today it is the largest university in Northern Hungary, with roughly 10,000 students and some 600 faculty and academic staff.

The campus (Egyetemváros) covers about 850,000 m² (85 hectares) and was conceived in the American collegiate model: it includes state-of-the-art laboratories, lecture halls, workshops, student dormitories, and extensive sports and cultural facilities surrounded by parkland. This broad infrastructure supports a vibrant campus life and research culture.

University of Miskolc has grown into a comprehensive institution with eight faculties spanning engineering, science, business and the arts. Its faculties include Earth and Environmental Sciences and Engineering; Materials and Chemical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering and Informatics; Law; Economics; Humanities and Social Sciences; Health Sciences; and the Béla Bartók Faculty of Music.

The range of programs covers bachelor’s, master’s and professional degrees in Hungarian and English and also offers doctoral (PhD) programs in its core disciplines.

About Miskolc

Miskolc, the fourth-largest city in Hungary, lies at the foot of the scenic Bükk Mountains, about 180 km from Budapest. It is a welcoming and affordable destination that blends natural beauty with cultural heritage, making it an ideal location for an international scientific conference.

One of Miskolc’s most iconic landmarks, Diósgyőr Castle, is currently under extensive renovation. While the castle itself is closed, its surroundings still provide a beautiful historical atmosphere, and visitors can explore the castle district being developed around it. Another famous attraction, the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, was unfortunately damaged by fire in 2024 and remains closed for reconstruction. In the meantime, guests can enjoy the modern Ellipsum Adventure Bath or other spa and wellness facilities in the area.

Visitors should not miss the resort area of Lillafüred, only 12 km from the city center, with its grand Palace Hotel, romantic Hanging Gardens, and forest trails leading to caves and waterfalls. The nearby Lake Hámori offers boating in summer, and the surrounding Bükk National Park is perfect for hiking. Within the city, Avas Hill provides panoramic views, while the historic downtown offers cozy cafés, cultural venues, and a vibrant local atmosphere.

Miskolc combines the charm of a Central European city with easy access to natural and cultural treasures. Its friendly hospitality and rich surroundings will ensure that your stay during the conference is both productive and memorable.
